Pursuant to Internal Revenue Code 7520, the interest rate for a particular month is the rate that is 120 percent of the applicable federal midterm rate (compounded annually) for the month in which the valuation date falls. That rate is then rounded to the nearest two-tenths of one percent.

Each month, the IRS provides various prescribed rates for federal income tax purposes. These rates, known as Applicable Federal Rates, or AFRs, are regularly published as Revenue Rulings. March 2020

Example of How to Use the Applicable Federal Rate (AFR) As of January 2019, the IRS stated that the annual short-term AFR was 2.72%, the mid-term AFR was 2.89%, and the long-term AFR was 3.15%. Please bear in mind, that these AFR rates are subject to change by the IRS.
